Embellish

Every woman knows how to embellish everything. So a love for embellished clothing is second nature for us. I love my vintage designer T-shirt. Pair it with the perfect vintage jacket and I am instantly in my happy place. The shoes my mother did for me. I have huge feet so the only tennis shoes that do me justice are like Keds etc. I know, I know I am a nerd.

I hope you guys like this look. I warned you guys my style has become progressively weirder. But I am becoming comfortable in my own skin. How are you guys doing?

Inspiration Upcoming Projects

I am in that weird place right now. You know, when you are craving change but you feel too lazy to do anything about it? Either way it is terribly discouraging. My latest project that I will have to juggle with the magazine, work and hopefully some freelance work is going to be a hefty project. However just considering the prospect of changing up my routine is making me a little happier than I have been.

So being that I am back home, I have to get my old room in order. One of the perks of my old room was that it once belonged to my older brother and it's massive. There is a lot of space to turn it something really awesome. So that is what I hope to do. I thought it might be cool to chronicle it on my blog. I am still deciding on what type of vibe I am going for.

Hope you like!!! XOXO

Thrifting and Repurposing for Fashion

One of my newest hobbies has been repurposing old things and making them into something more unique and catered to my individual style. When I was growing up, money was tight and we shopped at thrift stores. Today in 2012, it has become an ever-growing fashion trend to find unique and vintage items at the thrift store. I peeped this chic and funky looking denim vest Rihanna wore on a casual day out and about which inspired me. I went to the local, everyday thrift store here in DC instead of the trendy, more expensive vintage boutiques to find what I was looking for. I found an old-lady style Chico's denim jacket that had this funky riveting on the front pockets. Checked the price tag, saw that it was $4.00 and fell in love!

I took my new purchase home and got to work. Using only scissors and bleach, I cut snipped, ripped, and distressed my long sleeve denim jacket into this vest! I didn't follow any particular method, I just kept working with it until it looked right. To get the multi-colored denim look I rolled up the jacket and soaked overnight in a solution of bleach and water. I poured extra bleach on top to add some lighter shades to the jacket. I'm quite happy with the outcome and hope to perfect the process for future denim repurposing projects!

My Life at Whole Foods

Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE to cook! As part of my new Get It Right and Get It Tight plan, I've been exploring healthier food choices and better meal options. I used to have the preconceived notion that eating right was going to cost me so much more than my usual grocery store trips but of course I was wrong! I spent about $72 bucks on my last trip to Whole Foods Market. I bought cage-free eggs, grass fed organic beef, free range chicken breast, tons of organic fruits and veggies, Naked Juice protein and fruit smoothies, and some other random things. I think my most impressive purchase was fresh cut locally-made spinach and whole wheat pasta for about $1.50 a serving! Check back soon for an original recipe.

Chakula Tayari: Mushroom and Spinach Flatbread

This is my first guest post. I have talked about my friend and her blog before and now she is finally sharing some of her tasty recipes with me. I can honestly say that she is the reason I wish I was a vegetarian. Alas, it is very difficult for me to make such a commitment.

So here is her recipe for her mushroom and spinach flatbread
This is one of my quickest meal options that always leaves me wanting more. It proves that anything sauteed with garlic and red onion can do no wrong. Throw in spinach, mushroom, and zucchini and you have magic in your mouth. Throw that one some Trader Joe's Flat Bread with a thick line of garlic hummus and you have dinner.

What you need:
  • flat bread
  • mushrooms
  • spinach
  • zucchini
  • garlic
  • red onion
  • your favorite hummus
  • evoo

 Enjoy!
